A garden under the Plateau…

About Oak Canyon

Basin and Range

At the 6,000-foot elevation range and higher, Oak Canyon offers rock-cliff faces, expansive meadows and green “bottom land.” It is part of the greater Colorado Plateau. Northeast of Kanab, Utah, it lies southwest of Bryce Canyon National Park and between the Pink Cliff and White Cliff formations of the Grand Staircase.

Flora of the High Desert

Oak Canyon features groves of mature Oaks, Pinyon, and Juniper trees. The drainage features grassy green seeps, and wide sagebrush flats. It’s home to Utah’s state flower, the Sego Lily. The Desert Globemallow, Indian Paintbrush and occasional blossoming Prickly Pear cactus provide flashes of vivid color.

As an area of scenic interest, the Paunsaugunt region has few equals. From the southern rim of the Paunsaugunt Plateau, the land descends southward in an orderly succession of terraces from the Pink Cliffs across the White Cliffs, the Vermilion Cliffs, and the ‘Chocolate Cliffs’ to the Kanab Plateau and the rim of the Grand Canyon.
